the problem-causing picture

I had a field trip for work last week that involved my driving up to Fish Creek to pick up a pie at a closed pie shop. (They were expecting me.) I knocked on the door and picked up the pie and all was good. I had brought my camera up north with me, because I figured that I would wish I had it if I didn't bring it with me, and it wasn't like I was going to wish that I didn't bring it with me if I did bring it.

I went back outside with the pie and my camera in the same arm as my purse. Wait, let me word that better. I had my purse at my elbow on my left arm, with the pie box balanced on that arm, and my camera in my hand. (The guy I got the pie from suggested that I put the camera around my neck.) I got back out to my car and opened the passenger door, setting the pie on the passenger seat and putting my purse on the floor in front of it. I closed the door and went to take a picture of the sign, since when I tried to take a picture of the sign when I got there, my camera was being weird and beeping, which it turns out happened because it was set to self timer.

I take the picture, and I hear my car beep, meaning that the doors locked. I realized that I didn't have my keys, as they were in my purse, and I freaked out. I went and tried to open the doors, but they were obviously locked.

Thankfully, I had my phone in my pocket, and I was able to reach my dad, who called a locksmith for me. I was so embarrassed because I know (I wrote about it here) that my car will lock automatically after a short period of time if the driver side door isn't opened or the car isn't turned on.

It was 25 degrees out, and thankfully I was wearing a hat and gloves, as I ended up walking around the parking lot for half an hour while waiting for the locksmith. My feet were giant ice cubes though, since I was wearing Converse.

My car got unlocked, and fifty dollars later, this has solidified the lesson that I always need to have my car keys with me if my car doors are closed.

Memorial Day 2014

How was your Memorial Day? Did you do anything fun? I spent the first three days of the weekend at work. It was interesting, to say the least. I had Monday off though, so I spent the morning relaxing, and my mom and I went up north in the afternoon.

In the morning I worked on some writing and I did laundry and painted my toenails using OPI's You're Such a Budapest. After lunch, I colored a picture and hung out waiting for my mom to call me to say that she was ready to go.

Our first stop (just south of Egg Harbor) was Bay Trading Company, which is an antique store with lots of little booths. This is where I bought my set of goldenrod and white Pyrex bowls! I didn't buy any this time though.

We drove into Egg Harbor, and my mom wanted to look at some of the eggs that they have on display for the summer. At least one of these buildings is the Cupola House.

I just really liked taking pictures of the flowers!

I love all of the old buildings! This is the Cupola House. The detail is so pretty.

Some more flowers! I love all of the bright colors, especially the purple tulips. We also checked out a couple stores, including Greens 'n Grains and the Pink Umbrella. My mom wanted a snack, so we headed a little bit farther north, and we stopped at Wood Orchard Market. She didn't find what she was looking for there, but I got some honeycrisp apple chips and a postcard. We decided to continue north, and I wanted to go to Wild Tomato for dinner, so we ended up there for an earlier dinner.

We had a pizza with ham and pineapple. Their pizzas are woodfired, and taste so fresh. The pineapple was really sweet, and the ham was in big chunks instead of little slices. It was so delicious. We felt bad that we couldn't finish it, and we would have taken it with us, but I didn't want to chance getting food poisoning because of the car temperature, so I hope that waiter put it in the fridge for himself like he said he would. There were going to be scattered thunderstorms, according to the weather app on my phone, and it started to sprinkle as we left.

My mom wanted to stop at the ShopKo Hometown in Sister Bay, because she was looking for a curtain. I didn't really want to go in there, but I looked around at the kitchen stuff anyway. I want to get some thicker dishtowels. I ended up buying a shelving unit that I wanted for my laundry room/pantry, a new pair of Nikes, and a set of glass Pyrex containers. The Nikes and Pyrex were both on clearance, and I scored such a great deal on the Pyrex!

Of course, you can't go to Sister Bay and not take pictures of the goats on the roof at Al Johnson's! There were four of them up there, but these two were the funniest.

Because of the little bit of the storm that just passed through, the sky looked really cool, so we walked across to the marina. It wasn't as dark as it looks in the first picture, but that's how magical it felt.

On our way south, we had to stop at Wilson's in Ephraim for dessert.

Their ice cream is from Cedar Crest, which in my opinion, is the best for ice cream shops. The summer before my senior year of high school, I worked at a candy store in downtown Sturgeon Bay, and the ice cream that they had there was also Cedar Crest. I got the Caramel Collision {caramel ice cream with swirls of caramel and caramel cups}, which is a flavor we always had at the candy store, and I remember sneaking spoonfuls of it throughout the summer. Wilson's puts a jelly bean on the top of the scoop of ice cream, but my mom told the girls that I could have hers so I got two. (:

I love all of the little details of this vintage diner.

We headed south again to go home, and when we got into Egg Harbor, one of our friends was driving in front of us. I was so confused when it appeared that he was waving at no one on the side of the road, but then I realized that he was waving behind him at us, and then I realized who it was. haha.

We went to Target when we got to Sturgeon Bay, and I bought cling wrap, washi tape, and mascara. I was looking for a racerback tank top, but I didn't find any that I liked. I then needed a car wash (even though it was supposed to rain more) because of the dead bugs on my windshield, so we went to Shell for gas and a car wash. My mom wanted to get a copy of the Peninsula Pulse, so we stopped at the Door County Visitor Bureau. They have some really cute rocking chairs on their front porch.

When I got home, I put away my new stuff and I put together the shelving unit for my laundry room. It's five shelves, and that's too tall, so I'm only using four of them. It's going to be nice to have some extra storage space.

Quite a few food pictures this week. There are also a lot of different colors! This weekend was pretty busy at work since it was Memorial Day weekend. I had a fun day off on Monday, and I can't wait to share more pictures of that!

Wednesday 21 May // day one hundred forty-one :: this lunch {grilled cheddar and fuji apple} would have been better executed if I was better at using knives.

Thursday 22 May // day one hundred forty-two :: I was running late {hence the flash and not figuring out the lighting} for a dentist appointment, but I wanted to get a picture of my Converse while they were still clean! {the doormat is from Target}

Friday 23 May // day one hundred forty-three :: I picked up the last load of stuff from the house, so the living room is full again, and that's my excuse for not taking pictures of the apartment yet.

Saturday 24 May // day one hundred forty-four :: I went through those boxes and sorted out what was going to be donated, what was trash/recycling, what I was going to keep, and what I was going to try to give to someone I know instead of just Goodwill. I had to keep these two outfits for my American Girl doll. I still want a skirt like that for myself.

Sunday 25 May // day one hundred forty-five :: I've been doing quite a bit of coloring lately. it's very relaxing. this Dr. Seuss printable can be found here. {of course finding the link that way a few days later led me to the one I originally wanted... haha.}

Monday 26 May // day one hundred forty-six :: Wild Tomato in Fish Creek for dinner with my mom! their pizzas are wood fired. we had ham and pineapple, and it was the best I've ever had, with chunks (not slices) of ham and sweet pineapple.

Tuesday 27 May // day one hundred forty-seven :: green smoothie and lush green grass and leaves. {spinach + banana + peach + chia seeds + water & ice then I added some frozen strawberries after the picture}

Winter in Door County

I took a wintery drive up north a few days ago. I was hoping to catch sunset, and I did, but it was pretty lame, with only a little gold and blue. I had actually set my alarm that morning with the intent to take pictures at sunrise, but I looked at the weather on my phone when the alarm went off, and I decided that seven degrees was too cold. Oh well, there's always another day.

These first three are from the Baileys Harbor Marina. Lake Michigan was not completely frozen yet. It was so pretty here, but it was cold, and my gloves were being annoying. {I later switched to fingerless gloves, but then my fingers were icicles. It was a lose-lose situation.} You can see the snowflakes falling in the third picture!

This one is from Schoolhouse Park in Sister Bay. I'm not really sure how this is a park, but there is an old schoolhouse here that looks like it's from the 1930's or 1940's.

Anderson Dock is located in Ephraim. The top photo is actually from a store and gallery across the street, and they have some really beautiful artwork and jewelry in there. I believe the barn in the bottom photo is also a gallery.

Ephraim Moravian Church is so beautiful! They're located on a hill that is just above the main highway (42) that goes through Ephraim. This birch tree was behind the church in their parking lot.

If you have never been to a drive-in movie theater, you are missing out and should try to find one in your area! The Skyway is in Fish Creek, and I hope I am able to see a movie there this summer. It's been a few years since I have been there.

It seems like I get a lot of hits from the search term "Chateau Hutter," so here is a winter shot for you guys. (: There was another car parked here, so I'm guessing that someone ventured down to get some pictures at sunset. I hope they were able to get some great shots! I would love to go down there for sunset pictures {and perhaps a portrait session} someday, but I am too freaked out to go down there alone!

I got down to the Door County Boat Launch with plenty of time to watch the sun set, but as you can see, it wasn't very much of a show. Those dot-like things in the first picture are actually an ice covered scalloped metal edge of the dock. It was pretty icy there!

long drive & a little baking

yesterday I took a drive up north to go to some thrift shops. it was a fail. I only ended up going to one, and I didn't even buy anything there! I wasn't 100% sure where the thrift store that I wanted to go to was located, but I apparently drove right by it, and all the other ones were closed for the season. I did make a few stops along the way to take some pictures!

Fish Creek Beach. I pulled my camera out of my purse here and somehow managed to open the battery holder part of the camera and dropped the batteries in the snow...thankfully I had some extras in my purse!

I think it looks so much prettier in the winter.

rainbow around the sun. every time I looked up at the sky, it was there, and I wasn't sure if it was because I had my sunglasses on, or if it was really there.

I parked next door at the hardware store and walked on the side of the highway to do a little trespassing take some pictures of the sign and the big screen. I wanted to go into the parking lot part of the theatre, but I didn't think that that was a good idea.

Wilson's in Ephraim - I could go for some Cedar Crest ice cream right about now!

the beach in Ephraim - there were a bunch of dump trucks and other big equipment along the water/ice in Ephraim. I wonder what they were doing!

road to Northport - I wish this picture was of what I actually saw. the part of the road that you can see in the distance is really windy and hilly, and it's really cool!

I stopped in the middle of the highway to take this one, but here is a link to a better picture of the road that someone took in the fall.

I was going to screenshot a picture of GoogleMaps for the road, but the map doesn't do it justice, either.

Northport

I apparently arrived not too long before the ferry was leaving for Washington Island; there were a few cars in line.

On my way back south, I stopped at this cute little store where they have homemade jam, and I can't wait to try the strawberry-raspberry jam that I bought! I also got a carrot muffin mix from Rabbit Creek Gourmet. their products look so cute, and are such a great idea!

I made some Thin Mint cupcakes today! they're nothing too special, just a box of Pillsbury chocolate cake mix with ten crushed Thin Mints, and Duncan Hines Chocolate Mint frosting.
