2014 :: Year in Review + Goals for 2015

From one of my first posts of 2014, the words of the year were adventure and acceptance.

"adventure: That's part of the name of this blog, right? But there doesn't seem to be too much adventure. I've got at least one thing in the works that will fall under this word, but hopefully I will be able to make more room for more adventures this year.

acceptance: Life is all about change, and sometimes it's hard to deal with those changes. This year, I will accept what I cannot change and make the best of it."

As far as adventure, there were a few of those, the biggest two being a solo trip to Minneapolis and moving into my first apartment. I didn't do as many spontaneous things as I wish I would have looking back. And acceptance? That's a hard one. Life really is about change, and this year did bring quite a few changes that I am still working to accept including, but not limited to, my parents' divorce and the death of a friend.

Here's a look back on the past year.

{view all daily DSLR snaps here}

January

I rang in the beginning of the year with a sad instagram from work about how I spent a lot of the past year both at work and alone. I didn't exactly mean for it to seem as sad as it did, so that kind of caused a little problem. In all honesty though, this year was a bit of a struggle at times, and I kind of wonder if that was some foreshadowing of that.

The polar vortex gave me a couple extra days off of work, which was a weird thing for me. It also looks like I wasn't always needed for my classes at the Y and I took a couple shifts in child care.

February

February included having my sweet friends come for a week and there were some new faces this time around, including at least one that I got pretty attached to. My parents divorce was finalized which was a pretty strange thing for me to come to terms with. It’s weird because when you’re little, you think that your parents are going to be together forever, but then sometimes something just changes. Valentine’s weekend was spent with those dear friends. They are the lights of my life. I finally received my college diploma after finally completing the last piece of paperwork for my internship {oops!}. I went out one night to see WIFEE and the HUZz Band, Purgatory Hill, and Thy Dirty Deuce for Wifee’s birthday and musiclessly slow danced with one of my favorite gentlemen before leaving that night. I started looking at apartments. I also got new glasses!

March

At the beginning of March, I headed out to Minneapolis for a few days to just relax. I took a lot of pictures, visited a few churches and a museum, and went shopping at IKEA for the very first time. I taught my first Wee Read and Wiggle class! I celebrated working at the motel for four years and went to a Geri X concert. I signed the lease for my first apartment!

April

{the saturation got messed up on the roses picture when it was uploaded months ago, and I am too lazy to try to fix it}

The whole month of April and the second half of March was spent living in the house that I grew up in alone, which was one of the strangest things I have ever done. Summer camp planning started for the year. Easter was celebrated at my grandparents’ house and my adorable cousin played the ukulele that belongs to one of the second cousins. This was the first month of the year that I didn't have a day off.

May

I moved into my first apartment in May! I obtained my bartender’s license, which has yet to even be used. The biggest purchases of the year were purchased this month: a washer and dryer and a queen sized bed. I started trying to plan my birthday party. My mom and I went up north on Memorial Day just to hang out and take pictures and such. I got my second tattoo on the 29th.

June

June brought the lights of my life back for a week, and then summer camp started right after they left. I made sure to document every field trip that we took the kids on with a picture on instagram because I love that map on there. I took a drive on the backroads and found some cows near Fish Creek. I had a concert field trip for work, which was an interesting experience.

July

July was very much like June, in that I worked a lot with both the motel and camp. I went and saw my friend and her daughter, who was about a year and a half old at the time. Luna’s catalytic converter was replaced.

August

Summer camp ended in August, which always comes as a shock to my co-counselor and I. I even helped out with a gymnastics camp one day, which was an interesting experience. I turned 21, and had my birthday party with WIFEE and the HUZz Band at the Florian II, which is a supper club in Baileys Harbor. The party was a week after my birthday, so between my actual birthday and the party, I went and had a manicure and pedicure for the first time in a few years. the end of August brought a lot more hours at the Y, as my supervisor and I had to move allllll of our camp stuff out of the room where it has been for years so that it could be redone a little bit to be used for fitness classes. I watched Frozen for the very first time as I started to catch up on Disney movies from the past few years.

September

September started with Labor Day of course, which was my last day off before working 110 days in a row between the two jobs. Sometimes a day of work was really only a class or two at the Y, but it can be disruptive in that I can’t get away and really take time to myself. My mom and I took a day trip down to Kewaunee to have lunch with my grandma and we visited a salmon hatchery. Luna’s brake pads were apparently really worn down and were replaced at the end of the month.

October

October began with me getting back into going on walks and getting back in the pool (where I swam a mile), but it was pretty shortlived. The middle of the month had me going out to help ring in a dear friend’s birthday, and then finding out less than 24 hours later, on that friend’s birthday, that one of our nearest and dearest passed away. I was filled with regret when I realized that I didn’t even take the opportunity that I had to see him play when I saw him less than two weeks before his passing. Some of our friends came for his memorial a couple days later, and thankfully many more of them were in for the week of Halloween.

November

November brought the motel from crazy craziness to dead silence, which was pretty eerie, but things have picked back up a little bit. I got my hair cut for the first time in eight months. Thanksgiving brought time with family and I got to hear my almost-three-year-old cousin say my name for the very first time. Some friends were in town that weekend, so we went out to see another friend perform at a local bar.

December

December was busy getting ready for 2015 while finishing up 2014. One of the most special experiences was getting to see pat mAcdonald in a solo acoustic show. After working 110 straight days, I had a day off, which was productively spent running errands and doing things at home like baking, cleaning, and Christmas present wrapping. That was Monday the 22nd, and my mom came over while I was painting my nails and we used FaceTime to watch my sister get married. Christmas Eve was spent at my grandparents' house in the evening after a lovely lunch with my aunt. I went to Mass and lunch with my mom on Christmas, and then I worked that afternoon, followed by ginger lime martinis with a few friends. A few days later, I met up with some friends from high school for lunch. New Year's Eve was a wonderful and super long night with WIFEE and the HUZz Band, and some surprise friends!

3. get another tattoo. {sorry, Mom} May 29, 2014.

please note the sign to the right of my head - yes, it hurts. I would also like to point out that that is a freckle to the left of the raven, not blood.

4. graduate college with my associate's degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management. 20 December 2013 {read about it here}

5. try a new recipe to bring to Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Oreo White Chocolate Pudding Peppermint Cookies for Christmas

9. blog at least twice a week. yes!! and there were times that I blogged more than that, especially September, when I participated in Blogtember.

13. learn how to be more frugal. {and blog about my adventures along the way} the only part I blogged about was a January spending freeze, but I've actually tried to be better about not wasting my money. I don't go to Target nearly as often, and I'm waiting for some of that college stuff to go on clearance before I buy it. I also have been using more coupons and buying things when they are on sale! (:

14. take better care of myself. {eat healthier, do yoga, etc.} I've been eating better {less junk, more fruits and vegetables}, and I've been doing my own version of yoga, if you could call it that. I teach a few tumbling classes at the Y, so I do stretches and run around with them, and I am planning to get back in the pool and start swimming again when school starts up again.

15. go to the spa to get a pedicure, massage, and/or facial. never happened, even though I have two gift certificates, BUT I scheduled an appointment before my birthday, and I went on Wednesday for a manicure and pedicure.

16. learn how to apply makeup - maybe someone at Sephora would teach me? never happened. oh well.

17. start writing a book. while I decided to go a different direction with this, I did start working on it. {but I haven't worked on it much, and it's been a while. oops.}

18. learn how to play one song on the guitar. hahaha never happened, and I knew in the back of my head that it wouldn't.

19. drive up north at least four times. I lost count of the number of times that I actually went, but here are some times that I did a whole post of pictures.

20. plan a fabulous party for my twenty-first! (: kind of, sort of. Ruby is the best and we're making it happen, even if it isn't what I was initially thinking. {it's going to be a lot better.}

I passed with an 80% (:

Door County summer bucket list 2014

It's almost summer, and I've been thinking about what I want to do this summer, and I wanted to make sure that I have it written down somewhere where I can refer to it later! You might recognize a few of these from last year's list!

This isn't a sponsored post; there are links here to direct you to some of my favorite places in Door County!

{2013 summer bucket list}

1. go horseback riding. {probably at Kurtz Corral in Carlsville} no excuses!

2. watch the sunset on the water. I would say sunrise or sunset, but I think we all know that I'm not going to get up that early. there are so many great yet easy places for this on the bay side, and Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor has some killer lakeside sunset views too. on the Green Bay (sunset) side, I usually go to the Door County Boat Launch on Cty B, but there are some other spots along the water in Egg Harbor, Ephraim, and Sister Bay that would have good views. my Lake Michigan side (sunrise) favorite is Portage Park, but there would also be Whitefish Dunes and Cave Point, plus locations in Jacksonport and Baileys Harbor.

3. pizza at Wild Tomato in Fish Creek. I went here once, probably five years ago, and I remember it being really good. people always have great things to say about their wood-fired pizza.

4. Disney/Pixar movie marathon. okay, maybe not a marathon, but I still haven't seen Frozen, Enchanted, Tangled, and Toy Story 3. there are probably some other good ones that I haven't seen! the last movie I saw in a theater was Cars 2, and I haven't really watched many movies since around that time. I would also love to watch a movie at the Skyway Drive-In in Fish Creek!

I was going to also include some of my other favorite Door County places and experiences, but it got to be a bit long! (:

twenty while twenty {three quarters}

{Easter roses. sadly there were some oversaturation issues when I uploaded it to blogger.}

I only have three more months of being twenty, so here is an update on where I am with the twenty goals that I set for this year!

{all goals on this post}

1. get my own place.

I moved in on the first! I hope to share some pictures soon!

2. take a solo trip.

I went to Minneapolis for a few days in the beginning of March.

8. read twenty books.

I'm reading number thirteen, so I'm a little bit behind, but I am going to try my best to finish these last eight books!

9. blog at least twice a week.

I've kept up with this one, even though it is often hard for me to figure out what to post about! haha.

12. send out one piece of real mail {package, letter, postcard, etc.} each month.

I sent out some Valentines in February, and then in March I sent out some postcards from Minneapolis. I also sent a postcard in April to a friend who's in California, since he sent me one from Malibu. I sent out a couple notes for May!

19. drive up north at least four times.

I went up north for the fourth time in late March, but I didn't take a lot of pictures, and the ones that I took had the settings slightly off.

20. plan a fabulous party for my twenty-first! (:

Thanks to one of my sweet friends, the ball started rolling for the party yesterday - three months before it's going to happen! Wish me luck! (:

Twenty While Twenty Halfway Progress

{gold stripe notecards from Target's Dollar Spot - December 2013 // cupcake sticker from Target's scrapbook section - Stickerdoodle}

Yesterday was my half birthday, which means that in six months, I will be turning twenty-one, and I hope to have completed all of my Twenty While Twenty Goals! I told a few people yesterday that it was my half birthday, and they either thought I was crazy, or they had no idea what I was talking about. Apparently I'm still a little kid (:

original list here
three month progress here

2. take a solo trip.

Reservations have been booked for the trip I was originally hoping to take! I've also taken a few mini vacations, one to Green Bay and one to Appleton.

4. graduate college with my associate's degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management.

I graduated in December with highest honors, and you can read all about it in this post!

5. try a new recipe to bring to Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.

I made some delicious cookies, which were pictured in my post about Christmas. I was also told at Thanksgiving that I am no longer going to be able to get away with not bringing a dish to pass since I am no longer a college student. haha. Any suggestions for Easter?

8. read twenty books.

I have read ten books, which puts me right on track!

9. blog at least twice a week.

This one is still going, even though I feel like my weekly picture posts are kind of cheating.

10. buy a real leather belt. no more bad quality Target belts for daily wear.

I bought a real leather belt at Gap, of all places! I've only had it for about a month, but the quality does seem better than the other belts that I had been buying. And it was only $25!

12. send out one piece of real mail {package, letter, postcard, etc.} each month.

I have been keeping up with this one as well, and I have sent out mail in December and January. I have some Valentines ready to mail out this week!

13. learn how to be more frugal. {and blog about my adventures along the way}

I did a {mostly} successful January spending freeze

19. drive up north at least four times.

Here are some pictures from trip number three!

2014: on goals and words

frosted window. 1 January 2014.

I still don't understand how it is already 2014. I know that everyone is saying it, but 2013 definitely flew by. There were many changes in the past year, and I can't wait to see what this year will bring.

My goals for this year are to finish up my twenty while twenty by August ninth and to take at least one picture with my dslr every day.

I also plan to keep up with my detailed journaling of every day this year, and I am participating with Erin Sallie and Perkins for a no-spend month of January!

I saw a lot of bloggers choosing their word or words for the year, and I picked two words that I want to work on:

adventure: That's part of the name of this blog, right? But there doesn't seem to be too much adventure. I've got at least one thing in the works that will fall under this word, but hopefully I will be able to make more room for more adventures this year.

acceptance: Life is all about change, and sometimes it's hard to deal with those changes. This year, I will accept what I cannot change and make the best of it.

xoxo.
